Helix Project – Service Walkways on Mine Conveyors

A large utility company needed to replace their service walkways along their conveyers. These reach heights of over 60 metres and are required to hold 455kg and clearly any failure would be catastrophic. The existing panels were constructed many years ago with a very heavy mesh which could no longer be replicated and even then, the company felt the need  to increase the load capacity for additional safety.

As an additional constraint, the panels could only be 32mm thick. Several different panels were built and tested, but only with Helix could all the requirements be met. Testing was done with a loading rate of 136kg/minute with 3 minute holds every 272kg until failure. The company is now in a ten year program to replace all the existing panels.
